QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q. How often should filters be cleaned or replaced? A. In general, filters should be replaced or cleaned once a month. Some units are equipped with permanent filters. These can be cleaned according to the instructions supplied with your unit. Disposal filters should be replaced with filters of the same type and size as the original filter. Filters are inexpensive, and frequent changes keep your unit running efficiently. Clogged filters disrupt air flow and increase your heating and cooling costs. Be nice to your unit and change them regularly.
Q. Should a thermostat be set to “auto” or “on”? A. When the thermostat is set to “auto,” the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. This is the most used setting. However, there are advantages to using the “on” setting. First, the air in your home is continuously filtered through your air filter resulting in cleaner inside air. Second, the constant circulation provides an even temperature throughout the house.
Q. Can shrubs and flowers be planted around an outdoor unit? A. Yes. However, be sure to check them frequently. Keep them trimmed at least 18 inches from the unit to allow room for air to circulate in and out. Overheating can occur if air vents are blocked, resulting in the need for service.
Q. How do you know what size system a house needs? A. A licensed professional should determine which system is best for your needs. Some the variables to consider are the total square feet your home, the climate in your area, the number and type of windows, the amount of insulation in your home, the number of people living in the house, etc. Our experienced crew will consider all these factors in making a recommendation.
Q. What do rating numbers mean? A. Our government requires efficiency ratings for all air conditioning and heating equipment. This rating reflects how efficiently the unit uses energy. Different rating names are associated with different types of equipment. Air conditioning equipment is rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, or SEER. Heat pump equipment is rated by the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, or HSPF. Gas furnaces are rated according to their Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE. Though the names may be confusing for some people, it's easy to remember that a higher number means higher efficiency.
